A former executive at Shilo Inns has filed a $500,000 lawsuit against the owner, claiming Mark Hemstreet fired him because of a phobia about Muslims.
Samer Adel Sharaf, who had been director of restaurant operations for the hotel chain, was born near Jerusalem and is a practicing Muslim, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday in Multnomah County Circuit Court.
The suit contends that though Sharaf excelled during his more than five years on the job, Hemstreet ordered his firing in December 2015 -- during an atmosphere of heightened anti-Muslim rhetoric on the national stage.
