CSU: Muslim withdraws application “was never about me”

Sener Sahin wanted to run for the CSU as a candidate for mayor. After violent protests from the local association in Wallerstein, Swabia, the 44-year-old Muslim German entrepreneur withdrew his application, as he confirmed on Saturday. “It was never about me, it was always about my belief,” Sahin said on Sunday to the “Suddeutsche Zeitung”. “The C in CSU and I as a Muslim, it doesn’t fit together at all, it was said for example.”
Sahin was asked last year whether he wanted to run for the CSU, said local chairman Georg Kling. He should have been nominated by the CSU in Wallerstein next Thursday. But since the announcement of the proposal in December, there has been keen resistance in parts of the local branch. “We are in the village and we are not there yet,” said Kling, deeply disappointed. According to Kling, some candidates for the local council list had threatened to withdraw.
Sahin said “from the beginning: if the members are not behind me, then I will not do it.” He didn’t want the local branch to break it. He was not angry, Sahin emphasized. “I am someone who accepts every opinion,” said the 44-year-old. “When people say they are not ready to have a Muslim as mayor, that’s fine with me.”
