French lawmaker Eric Ciotti expressed his anger by stating that the Covid-19 patients who were staying in health-supported elderly care homes EHPADs were “left to die”.
“Most of the Covid-19 patients in the elderly nursing homes were not admitted to hospitals, these people who needed treatment were left to die,” Ciotti, a member of the opposition party “Les Republicains”, said in an interview with French Radio J.
Emphasizing that it is the biggest scandal of the health crisis, the French deputy criticized that many elderly patients were not “intentionally” hospitalized on the grounds that the hospital capacity was not sufficient. Ciotti stated that the government should open private hospitals to everyone in this case.
According to the report released by the French authorities on Saturday evening, 4,889 people who have lived in the elderly nursing homes in the country have died from the coronavirus.
Last Monday, the French government announced that a Covid-19 test would be carried out for all those staying in the aged care homes.
As in the city of Mulhouse in France, the inadequacy of healthcare workers in the response to the epidemic and the emergency health system becoming almost collapsed also makes it impossible to get rid of severe cases.
Speaking to the French channel BFM TV last week, Paris Deputy Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire said “we couldn’t even intervene” for elderly patients who died alone in their retirement homes.
In an interview with Grégoire, “Hospitals are not able to intervene, patients are dying by being alone in their rooms, despite the fact that emergency aid is notified,” he said.
