More than 500 people were ready to receive their Danish citizenship at a ceremony at Copenhagen City Hall, but one person had to leave without citizenship.
The man refused to lend a hand as part of the ceremonial end, and that had consequences.
It tells a member of Copenhagen’s Citizen Representation for the Alternative, Badar Shah, to the Jutland Post:
“The man clearly said he would not be forced to give a hand. It was a silent protest. He neither shouted nor screamed – and no media was present. He just handed in the document that all the applicants had received from the Ministry of Immigration – and then he went. ”
The debate on handshake of Danish citizenship has been running since 2018, when on December 20 of the same year it was passed by law that a handshake for a mayor or representative should be an integral part of receiving citizenship.
